The Last of Us

After almost 1,5 year being here at Naughty Dog, I can finally proudly present the project I've been working on this entire time. 'The Last of Us'.
It's been a blast so far! Working with Bruce Straley (Game Director) and Neil Druckmann (Creative Director) is by far best professional experience I had in my entire career.

Take a look at teaser trailer that was shown for the first time on VGA's 2011 last Saturday. And below, two of many concept artworks I've done for the project.

Weekend fun.. almost! I've been working on that piece throughout entire week actually, simply because of lack of time. Just half an hour here and there. Filling up portfolio variety.

Edit: more weekend fun.. on a contrary to photo-texture usage, something painted entirely from scratch.

New image I worked on in a free time with quite some long breaks due to work overload. I generally wanted to get into mild sci-fi genre with one foot and see if the ground underneath is stable enough to continue venture into genre I havn't touch for a while.
Done this image in a similar way as Dark riders and gladiator concepts. Trying to keep total hours count down to 1 full working day.
Enjoy and I hope you'll like it!

I slightly updated and refreshed the look of my website. Added few works that I didn't show before as well. Hope you'll all like it!

I haven't been bosting for a while, since last couple of months I was quite quite busy... So, once i found just a bit free time I decided to dig out one of older sketches (from late 2010) and finish it up a bit. Little Avatar'esque shot in same detail style as few other concepts I posted a while ago (dark riders, gladtiator vs dragon, etc).
Hopefully, I will be able to show some more fresh stuff soon and I really wish I could get those extra few hours to get back to do some sketches. Maybe soon as well, right now gearing up to get back to the grinder :) Busy busy busy... and fun!

Crysis 2 is out!

It's a great feeling to see a project I've been working on at Crytek to come out. I got to give kudos to art team for pulling of one of the most amazing graphics in computer gaming up to date and to their art director and friend of mine Magnus Larbrant for pushing the style into the new level of Crytek games.
Althou my contribution to the project was minor compared to all the hard work that have been put by the team since a year I left the studio, it is still a great relief and a moment of joy to see all the pieces coming together in the final product and to see how well it has been received by the critics so far:

Back to the NDI kennel tho, for even more awesome stuff to come !

LA mountains

... continuing previous exercise with references. I think sometime soon I'll grow confident enough to drag my laptop outside and do some outdoor paintings finally.

Custom Shapes v2.0

One more exercise with custom shapes as previously, althou this time I tried to be more loose with shapes. Everything is basically painted with flat colors and shading is done via gradient tool only. I start to like this painting style alot and I wouldn't get away without mentioning how much of an influence I'm taking from latest Robh's and Neil Ross paintings!

Custom Shapes

Took a bit more time to practice painting with simple shapes and sharp-shaped brushes, custom selections and gradients. Unlike with previous exercise, this time I took a step into more triangular forms.

+ bonus step-by-step to the mountain pic.

Ranger tutorial

I've gotten quite many requests for video tutorial of how I work. Here it is. It's not one of most amazing sketches I've ever done, however it shows one of plenty techniques of speed painting creation. There are many other ways I work with my files, Ranger tutorial is just one of them.
Image took me about 3hrs, so decided to speed it up abit.

Here is the final image in half of it's original resolution.

Rectangles, lines and gradients

Two sketches I painted experimenting only with rectangle/line, selection, gradient and simple round brush erasing tools.

What's mountain hiding.

Another weekend of sketching, this time Frazetta style. Lady, surprised what she saw walking by desert moutnain alcove.

Weekend brush mix

I've been working alot with my custom brush set recently, trying to utilize few settings here and there along with new patterns and what not. Apparently with results that weren't interesting enough to include them among existing brushes. And then I decided to take a step back instead and see what potential I could bring with stuff that is already there...
So here is the little scene I painted with my brushes, but this time trying to mix 3-4 different patterns and brush strokes, linking and overlaying different painted layers, etc. I'm pretty happy with results so far and more confident with each another brush stroke. Good exercise, loads of those ahead.

Crysis 2 , 3/22/11

This is one of the projects I've been working on while at Crytek in 2009-2010. I like the direction this game took and it's great to see how hard work of fellow Crytek'ers coming together. Great job guys!

The 3rd Letter

Grzegorz Jonkajtys film The 3rd Letter is out on vimeo free to watch. I helped Grzegorz with few scenes to complete this move last year. Hope you'll enjoy it!

Dark Riders

I attempted yet another exercise to load some realistic/cinematic lighting into the scene, play with textures and paint and close down with final image in less than 6-7 hrs.. almost. I think this one took maybe 7-8, where major chunk was just tinkering with proper adjustments and nailing down the spot-light-alike look.

On a side note, I've notice the more I try to blend phototextures in, the more I learn about weaknesses of my current brushes, since I really want to see brushstrokes bleeding into textures seamlessly. Tons of work ahead in that matter and I can't wait to see what's next to discover!

Friendly Chat

My newest dragon doodling. I think it took around ~5hrs to complete with maximum focus on realizm in colors, values and shapes. I decided not to waste time on painting details and used phototextures instead (mixed with custom brush work, as usual).

Inspiration? First it was by watching How to train your dragon (wait, what?!), then Spartacus TV show, then Two Steps from Hell - Invincible on headphones. Fun fun fun.

3x5 mins

3 quick thumbnails right before lunch-break end. I tried to keep the thumbnail as clear and simple as possible, yet showing enough detail without playing with values. Just simple contrast. I hope to do more of these, it feels like a good composition exercise.
